A best man speech leans on the roast. Yours can too - but its real power is intimacy. You've seen the bride at her worst and her best; you know the version of her that the room doesn't. That access is your superpower. Use it.
The structure
- Open warmly, maybe with a laugh - how you know her, and a hint that you've got stories.
- Tell one or two real stories - the ones that show who she is, not just what she's done.
- Talk about her partner - when you knew they were right, or how she changed when they arrived.
- Turn to her directly - say the true thing you'd never normally say to her face.
- The toast.
On the funny bits
You're allowed to be funny. In fact, a bit of gentle teasing early on makes the emotional ending land ten times harder - the contrast is the whole trick. Just keep the jokes affectionate. The test: would she laugh, or would she wish you hadn't said it? If you're unsure, cut it.
On the crying
You might cry. That's not a failure - it's often the most moving part. But to give yourself the best chance of getting the words out: practise it aloud several times (the emotion fades a little with repetition), keep the most emotional line short, and have a sip of water ready.
